Japanese electronics maker Sharp is planning to launch an ultra-high-definition 8K video camera for business use by year-end.
Sources say the firm will join up with a Tokyo-based imaging device maker ASTRODESIGN, which has 8K-related expertise.
The move is part of Sharp’s effort to expand its 8K operations. The technology supports 16 times as many pixels as existing high-definition images.
The firm started selling the world’s first 8K TV for home use in China in October, and has announced plans to begin selling them in Japan on December 1st.
By supplying 8K cameras to the market, Sharp executives hope to create a new industry that exploits the technology, as part of the company’s growth strategy.
The executives are eyeing such fields as healthcare and security, in addition to broadcasting.
