Police in the northern Japanese city of Akita say what appears to have been a tornado has swept away some cars.
The turbulence took place shortly after noon on Monday at a vacant area near the city center where people were parking their cars.
Three vehicles were damaged — one toppled on its side, another with its hood open, and a 3rd with a large dent in its roof.
Police say there are no reports of injuries.
A local weather observatory had issued a tornado alert, warning that atmospheric conditions over the city on the Sea of Japan were becoming unstable as a cold front passed through.
The observatory is investigating whether the turbulence was a tornado or a lesser type of turbulence.
