A parcel delivery experiment using a drone began on Monday in the Makuhari area in the city of Chiba, east of Tokyo, which has been designated as a national strategic special deregulation zone by the Japanese government.

In the day’s test, the drone flew autonomously using the Global Positioning System.

It transported a 720-milliliter bottle of wine from the rooftop of Aeon Mall Makuhari New City, a shopping center run by Aeon Mall Co. <8905>, an affiliate of retail giant Aeon Co. <8267>, to a nearby park, as well as medicines from a different park to the rooftop of a 10-story condominium building.

Checks were made on the impact of wind and radio signal conditions during the flights.

The government aims to put drone-based delivery services into practical use in 2019.
