The mountain straddles Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures in Kyushu.

The Meteorological Agency says a column of smoke rose some 2,000 meters high Thursday but had shrunk to around 400 meters on Friday morning.

The agency is maintaining a level 3 alert, on a scale of 1 to 5, restricting approaches to the volcano.

The officials warn of falling cinder and pyroclastic flows within about 2 kilometers of the crater.

They say falling ash will be concentrated to the northeast of the volcano in Miyazaki Prefecture, through early Saturday.

Officials in the town of Takaharu, at the volcano’s base, have cancelled an inter-school track and field event that was scheduled for Tuesday.
