Japan’s labor ministry says the average wage has declined for the first time in 13 months.
The ministry on Friday released the preliminary results of a survey that covered about 33,000 businesses across the country.
Average monthly pay, including bonuses and overtime, was nearly 430,000 yen, or about 3,900 dollars, in June. That’s down 0.4 percent from a year earlier, and is the first drop in 13 months.
The average wage in real terms, adjusted for inflation, is down by a margin of 0.8 percent. That’s the first fall in 3 months.
The average basic salary rose 0.4 percent to about 2,365 dollars. But the average bonus fell 1.5 percent to about 1,500 dollars.
A ministry official says workers received smaller bonuses due to stagnant business results and this may have pushed down the average wage.
