Tokyo population to peak in 2025

The Tokyo metropolitan government predicts the population of Japan’s capital will reach its peak in 2025. That’s 5 years later than the previous forecast. Officials made 5-year projections through 2060 based on the 2015 national census. They say 13.52 million people lived in Tokyo in 2015. The population is projected to hit 13.98 million in 2025, then begin to fall. The forecast for 2060 is 11.73 million. Reproduction/NHK Tokyo officials said 5 years ago that the peak would likely be reached in 2020. They now say the population will continue to increase because young families are moving to central Tokyo, where new condominiums are being built. They also see signs of an uptick in the sagging birthrate. The officials say in 2030 almost one in 4 Tokyo residents will be 65 or older.
