Powerful typhoon crossing Philippine island

A powerful typhoon is crossing the northern Philippine island of Luzon, after making landfall on Sunday night. Typhoon Nock-ten was moving west at 25 kilometers per hour about 100 kilometers south of the capital, Manila, as of 8 AM on Monday. The typhoon has an atmospheric pressure of 950 hectopascals at its center. Maximum gusts reached about 215 kilometers per hour near the center. The typhoon is expected to move into the South China Sea. More than 200 international and domestic flights have been cancelled. Around 400,000 people in southern Luzon have reportedly evacuated to schools, churches and other emergency shelters mainly due to fear of mudslides. Local authorities are urging people in the typhoon’s path to be on high alert against downpours, violent winds and high waves. Source: NHK Image: JMA Share this:TweetEmail
