Philippine’s President Rodrigo Duterte says he personally killed criminals when he was mayor.
Duterte said in a speech in Manila on Monday that when he was the mayor of Davao City, he would go looking for criminals and kill them to set an example for police officers.
Local media reported the remark on Wednesday.
A cabinet minister said that Duterte always resorts to hyperbole and exaggerates to get his message across.
Human rights groups have argued that Duterte, during his term as Davao Mayor, formed a group to assassinate members of crime groups as part of security measures.
Duterte’s crackdown on illegal drugs, which began since he assumed presidency in June, has led to the killings of more than 2,000 drug users by police.
