President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday joked about dying on a plane crash, which would pave the way for Vice President Leni Robredo to assume his post.
During a speech in Bukidnon, an aide handed him a note, in an apparent attempt to ask him to wind down. The President read the message to the crowd: “We only have 10 minutes for clear skies. For info sir. Otherwise, we go down.”
Duterte then said, “Hindi ba iyan ang gusto na si Leni? Eh di magdasal yan, mahulog yan. Ahhh. When it is time it is time.”
Duterte earlier accused Robredo’s Liberal Party, of planning to oust him. The party denied the allegation.
Robredo resigned as housing secretary earlier this week due to policy differences. She also raised concern over a supposed plot to “steal” her position.
Duterte assured Robredo on Thursday that she would finish her term as vice-president. Robredo’s closest rival, in the vice presidential race, former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, a Duterte ally, is contesting her victory.
