Typhoon Chaba heads to northern Kyushu

Typhoon Chaba has passed Japan’s southern prefecture of Okinawa and is heading toward northern Kyushu on Tuesday. Japan’s Meteorological Agency says that as of noon, the violent typhoon was traveling north at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour in the seas north of Okinawa. (Image: Reproduction/NHK) It had a central pressure reading of 915 hectopascals and was packing a maximum wind speed of 198 kilometers per hour near its center. Weather officials said wind gusts of 215 kilometers per hour were observed in Kumejima, west of Okinawa’s main island. Reported damage includes roofs ripped off buildings and broken windows. The storm is expected to travel north and then gradually shift toward an easterly path. It will approach northern Kyushu with a very powerful force from Wednesday morning to early afternoon.
