Heavy storm damage in Japan

Torrential rain caused landslides and floods in Japan as a storm made its way up the Pacific coast.

Typhoon Malakas was downgraded to a low-pressure system on Tuesday evening.

But the heavy rain took its toll.

A car was found submerged in an underpass in central Japan with a woman inside. She was unconscious, and later died at a hospital.

A 6-year-old boy in western Japan was washed away while trying to recover a ball from a raging river. His body was found on Wednesday some 10 kilometers downstream.

An angler was also swept away while attempting to cross a river in the mountains of central Japan.
Rescuers found his backpack 5 kilometers away.

A concrete bridge in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima was destroyed, and landslides can be seen along the river.

Floodwaters as high as one meter swept through a city in neighboring Miyazaki Prefecture.
