A woman in her 80s has gone missing after torrential rain hit southern Kyushu in southwestern Japan on Thursday, with the Japan Meteorological Agency warning of landslides, floods and swollen rivers.
Police and firefighters are searching for the woman after a resident in the town of Misato in Kumamoto Prefecture reported her missing. “I saw an old woman near a riverbank but she disappeared later,” the resident was quoted as saying.
About 77 millimeters of rain were recorded in one hour in Minamiaso, Kumamoto Prefecture, and 54 mm in Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, while authorities in Aira, Kagoshima, issued an evacuation advisory to 6,653 residents on Thursday morning.
Rainfall of 43 mm was also registered in the city of Miyazaki in southern Kyushu.
Up to 120 mm of rainfall is forecast over a 24-hour period until Friday noon in some parts of southern Kyushu.
