Japan to Offer Up to 70 Pct Discount for Travel to Quake-Hit Kyushu

The Japanese government will launch a system to enable a discount in hotel and package tour fees of up to 70 pct for visitors to the earthquake-hit Kyushu region, it was learned Tuesday. Under the comprehensive program to support the recovery of tourism in the southwestern region suffering from cancellations of accommodation and other adverse effects of the series of powerful quakes in April, the government will provide necessary costs totaling 18 billion yen to affected prefectures. The program, compiled Tuesday, aims to create demand and increase the number of visitors who stay overnight in the region by 1.5 million by the end of this year. For Kumamoto and Oita, two prefectures hit hardest by the quakes, the government envisages the average discount rate of 50 pct between July and September, with the maximum discount of 70 pct.
