Most of the victims were girls, according to the agency.
The number of people aged under 18 who fell victim to crimes through the use of social networking websites in Japan in 2015 rose by 231 from the previous year to 1,652, the largest since statistics began in 2008, the National Police Agency said Thursday.
The number of child victims using Twitter and other unregulated social networking sites is rapidly increasing.
Some social networking site operators fail to strictly check the ages of users although they set age restrictions under the terms of use, an NPA official said, adding that messages seeking “enjo kosai,” or compensated dating, tend to be left undeleted.
“We will urge operators to take countermeasures to help prevent crimes,” the official said.
