Police have arrested a 69-year-old man on charges of assaulting his former wife in front of the Saitama District Court building.
The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning, when Takahisa Matsumoto, a resident of Ageo, Saitama Prefecture, slashed his ex-wife’s left cheek with a knife in front of the entrance to the court, Sankei Shimbun reported.
The man also suffered minor self-inflicted injuries, as he was being subdued by court employees and people present at the site.
The woman, in her 60s, was taken to a hospital and although she was seriously injured, there is no threat to her life, police said.
According to police, Matsumoto has been appealing for an annulment of his divorce at the Saitama District Court and was there on Tuesday to complete procedures related to the case.
