Tokyo police have arrested 4 members of a criminal gang affiliated with Japan’s largest yakuza syndicate, the Yamaguchi-gumi, in possible connection with an ongoing conflict between groups.
Investigators say the four allegedly beat up a 35-year-old man in the Kabukicho entertainment district in Shinjuku on February 15th.
The attack was caught on video and posted online. Police have begun an investigation.
The man is believed to have been trying to join the syndicate’s breakaway group, the Kobe Yamaguchi-gumi.
On the day of the attack, the splinter group was holding a meeting of senior members of its affiliates from around Tokyo.
Police say the 4 suspects are refusing to talk.
Members of the 2 rival groups have carried out dozens of assaults, including gun attacks, against each other across Japan since the gang split last August.
