The government will open the State Guest House known as Akasaka Palace to the public from Feb. 5 to 18 on a trial basis in preparation for the extension of its annual opening period from April.
Designated as a national treasure, the guesthouse in the Moto-Akasaka area of Minato Ward, Tokyo, has until now been made public for only 10 days each summer. The number of visitors has also been limited to 2,000, who are chosen in advance by lottery.
The government plans to extend the opening period of the guesthouse to about 150 days a year from April, except for certain periods, such as when it is being used by foreign guests. By opening to the public important diplomatic facilities, the government hopes to make the guesthouse a tourist spot for foreign visitors, officials said.
During the trial period in February, facilities such as the Main Garden and Main Building will be opened from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Admission is free. No prior application is required, but only the first 2,000 to 3,000 people each day will be allowed to enter. The guesthouse will not be open on Wednesdays.
