Nine people were injured after clashes apparently between Turks and ethnic Kurds broke out outside the Turkish embassy in Tokyo Sunday morning, police said.
Four rounds of clashes occurred among people gathered to cast expatriate ballots in Turkey’s general election on Nov. 1, Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police Department said.
Those injured include two police officers stepping in to stop the clashes. A bus window was shuttered.
The initial clash happened among 20 to 30 people around 6:50 a.m. (9:50 p.m. Saturday GMT), when about 100 people were at the scene, according to the police department.
The clashes occurred after a group tried to display a flag for the Kurdish militant group PKK, according to a 38-year-old Turkish man from Gifu Prefecture, central Japan.
