Search operation suspended after volcanic eruption

Firefighters and police have temporarily suspended a search operation at a ski resort in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo. A nearby volcanic eruption killed one person and injured 11 others on Tuesday.

The team was looking for people that may still be stuck in the snow near Mount Kusatsu-Shirane.

But they’re halting the operation because of volcanic tremors. The Meteorological Agency continues to warn people to stay away from the volcano.

It has kept the alert level at 3 on a scale of 5, saying more eruptions may occur.

The search will resume once experts determine the situation has stabilized.
