An NHK camera in Odawara, west of Tokyo, captured the object in the southern skies. It disappeared after emitting a powerful green light.

Other NHK cameras in central Japan and Tokyo also recorded the phenomenon, which lasted for about 3 seconds.

Some people posted reports and photos on Twitter and other social media.

A viewer in central Japan told NHK that the bright object glowed strongly before it disappeared, but did not make any sound.

A researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Hitoshi Yamaoka, says he thinks it was a fragment of an asteroid that burned up in the Earth’s atmosphere.
