With the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics just 3 years away, an emergency response drill was held on Tuesday in Tokyo Bay to practice rescuing passengers after a terrorist attack on a cruise ship.
About 150 Coast Guard personnel and fire fighters took part in the training exercise. The scenario involved terrorists setting off a bomb in a cabin that caused numerous passenger injuries.
The ship’s crew guided passengers to safety and extinguished the fire.
Rescue workers then set up a triage area to determine which of the wounded required treatment first.
Victims who were unresponsive or had respiratory problems were taken to another ship for immediate transport to hospitals.
Some participants played the part of foreign tourists.
Rescuers asked them in English about their symptoms and where they were injured.
A Coast Guard official said the first priority is to prevent terrorism, but if an attack should occur, he hopes the public and private sectors can work effectively together to respond.
