A powerful typhoon will likely approach Japan’s southernmost prefecture of Okinawa this weekend, bringing strong winds and high waves, the weather agency warned Thursday.
Typhoon Noru, the season’s fifth typhoon, is expected to approach the Okinawa region from Friday and then may change course to move up through the southwestern main island of Kyushu, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
As of 9 a.m., the typhoon was moving north-northwest over the Pacific Ocean south of Japan at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour, packing winds of up to 216 kph with an atmospheric pressure of 945 hectopascals, the agency said.
After traversing Kyushu, the typhoon is likely to move toward the Chugoku region in the western part of Japan’s Honshu main island before reaching the Sea of Japan, according to the agency’s forecast.
