Severe tropical storm Nanmadol is lashing the western Japanese region of Kyushu with heavy rain.
The Meteorological Agency says Nanmadol made landfall near Nagasaki city on Tuesday morning.
It says the storm is heading east-northeast at 60 kilometers per hour, packing winds of about 90 kilometers per hour near its center.
Nanmadol is set to move on to the Shikoku and Kinki region in western Japan, and Tokai in central Japan.
It’s expected to bring rainfall of more than 50 millimeters per hour, mainly to Shikoku and other parts of western Japan. Lightning is also possible.
Officials are urging people to watch out for mudslides, swollen rivers, flooding, lightning strikes, sudden gusts and high waves.
