Japan Post delivers at a discount for online stores as it gets a huge volume of packages from them.

But an increase in online shoppers and a rise in labor costs stemming from a worker shortage led Japan Post to consider a rate hike.

The country’s leading package delivery firm, Yamato Transport, is preparing to raise its prices for the first time in 27 years.

Japan Post plans to maintain its delivery prices for individuals, after raising its base fare in 2015.

But officials hinted at a possible review after they study profitability.
