Police and experts from across Japan meet to address stalkers

Police officers and psychiatrists from across Japan have gathered to discuss how to rehabilitate stalkers who refuse to undergo psychiatric treatment. Some 80 officials and experts met at the National Police Agency in Tokyo on Monday. Since April last year, police began urging habitual stalkers to visit psychiatrists and undergo treatment or counselling. But the officials say among the 293 cases, only about 25 percent heeded their advice. 60 percent of the stalkers denied needing consultation, and rejected receiving professional guidance. Police face the challenge of convincing them to receive therapy. The number of calls made to police by alleged victims of stalking topped 20,000 in 2015.
