The operator of Narita International Airport launched a demonstration trial on Monday for a robot that takes away the used dishes of lounge users at the airport in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.
Narita International Airport Corp. plans to promote the use of robots to improve passenger service ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
During the five-day test in a lounge at the airport, the operator will give lounge users a questionnaire, including on the usability of the robot.
The robot, HOSPI, developed by Japan’s Panasonic Corp. to deliver drugs at hospitals, can move autonomously thanks to mapping information installed beforehand.
Equipped with a high-performance sensor, HOSPI moves around avoiding obstacles. The robot can halt if a person suddenly runs in front of it.
