A powerful winter pressure pattern has prevailed throughout Japan and brought heavy snow to the mountainous regions along the Sea of Japan. The Meteorological Agency says that as of 11 AM on Monday, the snowfall reached a depth of 2.04 meters in Hinoemata village in Fukushima Prefecture and 1.71 meters in Tsunan town in Niigata Prefecture. It reached 1.68 meters in Minakami town in Gunma Prefecture. Snow is expected to continue in the mountainous areas along the Sea of Japan in northern and eastern Japan. By Tuesday morning, there’s likely to be additional snowfall of up to 80 centimeters in mountainous areas in Niigata Prefecture, 60 centimeters in the Tohoku region as well as in Nagano and Gunma Prefectures, and 30 centimeters in Hokkaido.
