The first snow of the season has fallen on the plains of Japan’s northern main island of Hokkaido.
Weather officials said they confirmed the snowfall in the city of Wakkanai at around Thursday midnight.
The city saw snow 15 days earlier than usual and 18 earlier than last year. It’s the second-earliest snowfall in the city since data collection began in 1938.Earlier, a cold air mass brought snow mainly to mountainous regions of Hokkaido from late Thursday to early Friday.
Several centimeters were observed at around 6 AM on Friday at 1,000 meters on a hill between the city of Kitami and the town of Kamikawa.
Temperatures in the area dropped to minus 3 degrees Celsius. Weather officials are warning that mountain roads could become icy and affect traffic.
