Japan’s transport ministry has banned Samsung’s troubled Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on all flights in the country.
The ministry has instructed Japanese airlines to notify passengers of the new restriction.
South Korea’s Samsung Electronics has stopped production and sales of the new smartphone model following numerous reports of devices catching fire.
The company is now offering owners refunds or replacements with another model.
Japan’s transport ministry had initially allowed air passengers to carry Galaxy Note 7 on flights under certain conditions, such as turning off the devices.
But the ministry eventually decided to ban the model on concerns the smartphones might affect safety during flights.
US transport authorities also announced a similar measure on Friday, saying aircraft safety must come first.
