The number of foreign residents of Japan has reached a record high of more than 2 million. The Justice Ministry’s Immigration Bureau says that 2,307,388 foreigners were residing in the country as of the end of June. There was an increase of 75,199, or 3.4 percent, compared to the survey conducted at the end of last December. By nationality, China topped the list of foreign residents at 677,571. South Korea came second at 456,917, followed by the Philippines at 237,103. The number of Vietnamese increased to 175,744, up nearly 20 percent from 6 months earlier. It is also about 5 times as many as in a survey conducted in late 2007.
