Suspect said, ‘I caught them at home without killing them, I wanted to give them life’.
Hyogo Prefectural Police on Monday arrested a 56-year-old woman for allegedly releasing cockroaches in a supermarket in Kobe, reports the Asahi Shimbun (July 5).
On June 26 at around 11:20 p.m., the woman, a clerk at a primary school, allegedly opened a plastic bag full of more than 10 live cockroaches in front of the fresh fish section of the market, located in Tarumi Ward.
The woman, who has been charged with causing a disturbance, denies the charges. “I caught them at home without killing them. I wanted to give them life,” the suspect is quoted by officers from the Tarumi Police Station. “I did not intend to cause a disturbance.”
An examination of security camera footage revealed a woman with a plastic bag on the day of the crime. On July 4, an employee at the market noticed a shopper at the store resembling the woman in the footage and notified police.
According to the Yomiuri Shimbun (July 5), employees of the market collected the cockroaches on the same day they were released. The following day, an extermination was performed by a pest control service.
