A 19-year-old university student has become the youngest Japanese to scale the highest peaks on each of the 7 continents.
Supporters of Marin Minamiya say the Waseda University sophomore reached the summit of Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, on July 4th. Denali was known as Mount McKinley until last year.
Minamiya’s supporters say she began climbing the 6,190-meter mountain peak in the state of Alaska in June.
They say she began her quest to scale all 7 summits in January 2015.
She conquered her 6th, Mount Everest, in May, becoming the youngest Japanese to stand atop the world’s highest peak.
Minamiya wrote afterward on her Facebook page that she “did it,” and felt “a sense of accomplishment.”
She could be back in Japan as early as Tuesday, and plans to hold a news conference next week.
The previous youngest Japanese to scale the 7 highest summits was 22 years old.
