Unknown assailant stabbed Chugoku Shimbun deliveryman about 10 times with an ice pick.
Hiroshima Prefectural Police are searching for an assailant who stabbed a newspaper deliveryman with an ice pick in Hiroshima City early Wednesday, reports the Yomiuri Shimbun (July 27).
At approximately 3:00 a.m., the assailant used a blunt object to strike the head of the deliveryman, a 66-year-old employee at the Chugoku Shimbun, as he commuted to work by bicycle in the Funairiminami area of Naka Ward. The assailant then stabbed the victim in the chest with an ice pick about 10 times.
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
After the assault, the victim managed to flee the scene on his bicycle. A male passerby, 52, found him seated on a pathway about 700 meters away from the crime scene and alerted emergency services.
Officers from the Chuo Police Station are examining security camera footage in an effort to locate the perpetrator in what is being treating as an attempted murder case, according to TV Asahi (July 27).
