The Kyoto State Guest House in Japan’s ancient capital has begun accepting tourists all year round in a bid to draw more people from inside and outside the country.
Japan’s second state guest house for welcoming foreign dignitaries was built in traditional Japanese style.
Until now, the facility was open to the public for only about 10 days in the summer and access was limited to those chosen by lottery.
Starting Thursday, the guest house has opened all year round, except for occasional days. On the first day, people lined up before the gates opened. Many had made advance bookings on the Internet.
Visitors were seen taking photographs at the Yubae-no-Ma, a room where ministerial and other meetings are held. The room features a tapestry depicting a mountain sunset.
Kyoto’s Imperial Palace is also due to open to the public all year round, starting next Tuesday.
