Japan Babysitter Given 26 Years in Prison for Boy’s Death

Yokohama District Court sentenced a 28-year-old Japanese male babysitter on Wednesday to 26 years in prison for charges including the murder of a two-year-old boy under his care in 2014. Presiding Judge Takao Katayama said, “The accused abused his position as a babysitter to commit a very malicious act.” At his trial with lay judges, Yuji Motte denied murdering the boy he was babysitting at his apartment in Fujimi, Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo. The defense claimed that the man deserved a seven-year sentence mainly for professional negligence resulting in death, while prosecutors demanded an indefinite prison term. “It is fair to conclude that he had a strong intent to kill the boy as he covered the boy’s mouth and nose with his hand with very great force for several minutes,” Katayama said.
