Electronics giant Hitachi is looking to diversify its business. It wants to develop a simple way of detecting early-stage cancer by screening urine samples.
Hitachi said on Tuesday a dedicated team will focus on technology to detect breast and colon cancer. The project is a joint venture with a subsidiary of trading house Sumitomo.
It came into being after researchers discovered the presence of some substances in the urine of cancer patients.
The team hopes to develop the equipment and diagnosis systems needed for quick cancer screenings within a few years.
