A knife-wielding man stabbed four women at a shopping mall in Kushiro, Hokkaido on Tuesday, leaving one of them dead and the other three injured, police said.
The police arrested the man at the scene. The resident of Kushiro told the police he is suffering from mental illness. “I stabbed the people because I don’t care if I’m sentenced to death,” he was quoted as telling the police.
The man assaulted the four women at around 3:15 p.m., according to the police.
The dead woman, identified as 68-year-old Masako Tonuma, was stabbed in the chest, while a woman in her 70s was stabbed in the hip and seriously injured, and the two others sustained minor injuries, the police said.
One of the women was an employee at the mall, and the other three were customers, according to Aeon Hokkaido Corp, the mall’s operator.
