Japanese police have detained a 23-year-old man who allegedly kidnapped a girl two years ago.
Police had issued an arrest warrant for Kabu Terauchi on Sunday after they placed the 15-year-old girl in protective custody.
Investigators say Terauchi told the girl in March 2014 to get in his car near her junior high school in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo. Police added Terauchi deceived the girl by making up a story that her parents had decided to divorce.
Police also said the girl had been locked in Terauchi’s apartment in Tokyo most of the time. She had been tightly watched over by Terauchi even when she went outside.
The girl reportedly called police on Sunday afternoon from a pay phone at a station near the apartment. Police quote her as saying she made the call when Terauchi went out.
Police say the girl appears to be unharmed physically, but was sent to a hospital for medical checkups.
Investigators found Terauchi in Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan on early Monday morning, after they received a call that a man was seen covered with blood while walking.
