Turkish media report that a Japanese man has been detained in Turkey on suspicion of seeking to join the Islamic State militant group.
Multiple media report the 24-year-old was detained by security troops in southeast Turkey while heading by car for a town near the border with Syria.
They say the man’s cell phone had records of contacts with members of the militant group in Syria through social media.
He reportedly told authorities that he attempted to cross the Turkish border to join the militant group.
Japan’s embassy in Ankara contacted local authorities on Wednesday. Officials were told that Turkish authorities have questioned a Japanese national in his 20s, and are discussing what to do next.
The media report the man will undergo more questioning in court and will likely be deported from Turkey.
