Police in Tosu, Saga Prefecture, have arrested the manager of a yakitori restaurant on suspicion of attempting to rob the establishment on Jan 15.
According to police, the suspect, Takashi Sato, 22, wearing a mask and sunglasses, entered the restaurant when he was off duty, and threatened staff with a knife, Fuji TV reported.
Although Sato was silent during the incident, one of the employees apparently suspected who he was and asked him if he was Sato.
Sato took off his mask, told the employees to watch out for robberies and left the scene without taking any money, leaving the staff wondering if it was some sort of drill.
On the afternoon of the same day, a false report to police was made by Sato saying that two men had robbed the restaurant of 300,000 yen in cash.
Police said Sato has already been arrested on suspicion of embezzling 57,000 yen from the restaurant and a further charge of attempted robbery will be added.
