A festival featuring snow huts called “kamakura” has begun in Nikko City, north of Tokyo.
The opening of the annual event at the Yunishigawa hot spring resort was postponed for a week this year because the area had received little snow.
Nine snow huts about 3 meters tall were built at the venue. Tourists took photos and had barbecue parties in the huts.
The event’s organizers also built about 800 miniature snow huts along a nearby river. The 50-centimeter huts were lit by candles in the evening.
A visitor from Saitama Prefecture said he enjoyed the atmosphere.
An elementary school girl from Tokyo said she had fun making a snowman. She said it was warm inside the snow hut where she had a great barbecue.
