Water still out in west Japan

Many people in western Japan are without water after a powerful cold wave caused pipe bursts and leaks. Water service was out for 196,500 households in 15 prefectures as of Wednesday afternoon. The figure on Tuesday night was about 259,000. The prefecture with the worst damage is Fukuoka, with 106,300 households from 15 municipalities affected. In Omuta City, more than 29,000 households are still without water. In Omuta, supply vehicles from Self-Defense Force and other groups are delivering water to the public. Many residents received water at an elementary school on Wednesday morning. A man in his 70s said he needs water to wash dishes. He added that he couldn’t take a bath last night, and hopes water service resumes soon. City officials say they want to fully restore the service by Friday morning.
