Heavy snow blanketed many areas of northern and western Japan along the Sea of Japan coast on Tuesday.
The Meteorological Agency says a low-pressure system is bringing strong winds to much of the archipelago.
Gusts up to 110 kilometers per hour hit the northern Japanese city of Nemuro and the city of Kanazawa on the Sea of Japan coast in the morning.
Up to 70 centimeters of snow fell in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region of northern Japan over 24 hours, as well as in the mountains of the Chugoku region in the west.
Snow and strong winds are expected to continue until Wednesday as the low-pressure system stalls near Hokkaido. Blizzards are forecast in some areas.
Weather officials have also issued high surf and tide advisories.
