Rescue operations are underway in Afghanistan and Pakistan after Monday’s magnitude-7.5 earthquake. The disaster has killed more than 300 people in the 2 nations.
The massive quake in northern Afghanistan jolted wide areas in countries including Pakistan, India and Uzbekistan.
Pakistan’s disaster response officials say they have so far confirmed 228 dead and 1,620 injured, mainly in northwestern regions near Afghanistan.
They say at least 2,500 houses were damaged, and that many people likely remain trapped under collapsed buildings.
Pakistan’s government sent military helicopters to assess damage in the hardest-hit areas in mountainous areas. Work is underway to repair roads to remote areas.
In Afghanistan, authorities say 81 people were killed and 270 injured. Officials are travelling to remote villages to gauge the extent of the damage.
